WEDDINGS Timeless Traditions With A Greek Flavour

Weddings: “Big Fat Greek Ones”

Wedding Time? Yours? Congratulations!

Weddings are always a universal celebration of love and commitment. For a unique wedding, let Loutra Edipsos become the backdrop for your special day and watch magic happen.

Therefore, let’s set aside the trips, excursions and beach visits for a moment, and let’s take a look at what it is that makes a traditional “Fat Greek Wedding” with Dream Your Travel such a special affair.

First Things First … When Is A Good Time for Greek Weddings?

According to Greek Orthodox tradition, there are dates during the year that are considered to be “good luck” and others that should be avoided at all costs.

First, the dates to avoid:

  • The first two weeks of August. These are devoted to the Virgin Mary.
  • Lent, the 40 days before Easter.
  • August 29, which marks the death of Saint John the Baptist.
  • September 14, which is the celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
  • Anytime in the 40 days leading up to Christmas.

Secondly, when are the “Lucky months”?

Well, according to tradition and superstition, the “lucky” months are January and June.

The reason these months are considered good months for marriage, is because in ancient times January was the month dedicated to the wife of Zeus and the goddess of marriage and fertility – Hera.

As a result of the Romans translating Hera to Juno and dedicating the sixth month of the year to her, June also became a special month.

Timeless Traditions

Step into a world where ancient traditions will blend seamlessly with your very own modern love story. Greek Orthodox weddings are a celebration of heritage, faith, and timeless commitment. From crowning ceremonies to koufeta blessings, each ritual weaves a tapestry of love.

Let’s explore some of this enchanting journey together.

Koufeta

These sugar-coated almonds symbolise life’s bittersweet moments.

As you savour their delicate crunch, remember that marriage, like koufeta, blends sweetness and challenges.

Stefana (Wedding Crowns)

Two intertwined crowns, joined by a ribbon, rest upon the couple’s heads.

A reminder that they now reign together—a partnership crowned in love.

The Wedding Rings

At the start of the ceremony, the couple places the rings on the tips of their wedding fingers, and the “Koumbaro” or best man will exchange them three times.

The priest will then bless them three times.

Circling The Table

The couple circles the ceremonial table three times, representing their journey through life’s cycles.

With each step, they embrace past, present, and future.

The First Bite

As husband and wife, they share a bite of honey-drenched bread. Sweetness infuses their union, promising a life nourished by love.

A dance of abundance and community support.

Breaking Plates

Smash! Fragile plates shatter underfoot, signifying the couple’s ability to weather life’s storms together.

The more shards, the stronger their bond.

Bridal Shoes

The bride writes her single friends’ names on the soles of her shoes. Whose name wears off first? Tradition hints at the next bride-to-be.

Sharing The Pomegranate

A single pomegranate, bursting with ruby seeds, symbolizes fertility and a fruitful union.

The couple shares the pomegranate signifying that their love will multiply like seeds in fertile soil.

So, let’s raise our glasses to the tradition, love and joy of authentic Greek weddings.
